            Below are the Essential Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics that are the focus for teaching and learning for each trimester:

           

Trimester 1 – 1st Benchmark

 

English Language Arts

 

Word Analysis

  • I can hear beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words.
  • I know the short vowel sounds.
  • I can blend sounds to make words.
  • I know how to break apart the sounds in a word.
  • I know the letter sounds and how to blend them to read.
  • I can read my sight words.
  • I can read word families.

 

Writing

  • I can write a story about myself.
  • I can stay on topic when I write.

Mathematics

 

Number Sense

  • I can count and write numbers in order up to 50.
  • I can show which number means less than, equal to, or greater than to 30.
  • I can show what addition and subtraction means.

  • I can add and subtract problems with one digit numbers.

*    I use estimating and problem solving to compare numbers to 100.

 

Measurement & Geometry

  • I know the names of shapes and can tell what makes each shape different. 

           (including the faces of 3 dimensional objects.)

  • I can sort and group objects by attributes and tell why. 

     (e.g. color, shape, roundness, position)

 

Mathematical Reasoning

*  I can use tools or drawings to solve problems.

*  I know how to pick a strategy to solve a problem. (e.g. draw a picture, use

     manipulative, make a graph)

*  I can explain and show how I solved a problem, and tell why I did it that way.

  • I can change sounds in words to make new words.
  • I know the letter sounds and how to blend them to read,
  • I can read my sight words.
  • I can read common word families with long vowels.
  • I can sort words into groups that are alike.

 

Comprehension

  • I can answer who, what, when, where, and how questions about a story.
  • I use clues in the story to help me predict.
  • I can talk about the setting and characters in a story and put the events in order.

 

 

Writing

*   I capitalize names, the word I, and the first word in a sentence.

*   I can spell my sight words and words with short vowels.

*   I can write a story about myself.

*   I write and speak in complete sentences that make sense.

Mathematics

      8 = 3 + 5 or 4 + 4, models or pictures)

  • I know my addition facts up to 10 “as fast as a snap”. I know my subtraction

     facts down from 10 too.

  • I can use addition facts to solve subtraction facts because they are related. 

     (e.g. 1 + 2 = 3 so 3 - 1 = 2)

  • I can count by 5’s and 10’s up to 100.

*  I use estimating and problem solving to compare numbers to 100.

Word Analysis

  • I can read words with tricky vowels.
  • I can read words with 2 vowels together.
  • I can read words with ar, er, ir, or, and ur.

 

  • I can read compound words and contractions.

 

  • I can read base words with s, -ed, ing endings.

 

  • I can read common word families with tricky vowel

      combinations such as ou, ow, oy.

·        I can read sight words.

 

 

 

Comprehension

 

  • I can retell the main ideas of the story.

 

  • I can talk about the plot, problem, and outcome.

 

  • I can remember, talk about, and write about books I have read.
  • I can read smoothly so it sounds like talking.

 

 

Writing

  • I write and speak in complete sentences that make sense.
  • I use complete punctuation and capitalization when I write.
  • I can stay on a topic when I write.
  • I know when to use –s or –es at the end of a noun.
  • I know how to use pronouns like his, her, their, your, my, mine.
  • I know and use contractions when I write.
  • I correctly end each sentence with a period, a question mark,

      or an exclamation mark.

  • I know the three different kinds of sentences. I can tell the difference

      between a telling sentence, a question sentence, and an exciting sentence.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mathematics

 

Number Sense

  • I can show which number means less than, equal to, or greater than using the

     signs <, =, > to 100.

  • I can add three one-digit numbers. (e.g. 1 + 5 + 2 = 8)
  • I can show different ways to make numbers up to 20. (e.g. number sentences

           2 = 4 +4 + 4 or 7 + 5, models or pictures)

  • I can group and count objects by tens and ones.
  • I know my addition facts up to 20 “as fast as a snap”. I know my subtraction facts

     down from 20 too.

  • I know what number is ten more or ten less.
  • I can count by 2’s and 5’s to 100.
  • I can add and subtract problems with one- and two- digit numbers.
  • I know the name and value of each coin.  I can show different ways

     to make the same amount.

*  I use estimating and problem solving to compare numbers to 100.
