Below are the Essential Standards for English Language
Arts and Mathematics that are the focus for teaching and learning for each
trimester:
Trimester 1 1st
English Language Arts
Word Analysis
- I can use spelling patterns to
read.
- I use vowel and consonant
patterns to sound out words (vcv: ago, like / vccv: little)
- I chunk sounds when I read a
word I dont know.
- I can take apart a compound
word and figure out the meaning.
Comprehension
- I can retell the facts and details of what I
read so I can clarify and understand.
Writing
- I know a complete sentence has a naming and
action part and punctuation.
- I spell expert words correctly.
- I can write using basic spelling patterns.
Mathematics
Number Sense
- I can count, read and write numbers to 100 and
tell the place value of the digits.
- I can order numbers to 100 and compare them
using greater than(>), less than(<), and equal to(=).
- I know that fact families use the same three
numbers in addition and subtraction and I use fact families to solve
problems and check my answers.
- I know and use symbols to label money ($, ’).
Algebra &
Functions
- I can add numbers in any order and get the
correct answer and check my answer.

English Language Arts
Word Analysis
- I know common abbreviations.
- I use plurals correctly when I read.
- I can explain what antonyms are(words that mean
opposite).
- I can explain what synonyms are (words that mean
the same).
Writing
- I use parts of speech in writing and speaking.
- I know where to use commas in writing letters,
dates, and lists.
- I know where to use capitals when I write.
- I stay on topic in my writing.
- I revise and rewrite to improve my writing.
Mathematics
Number Sense
- I can count, read and write numbers to 1,000 and
tell the place value of the digits.
- I can order numbers to 1,000 and compare them
using greater than(>), less than(<), and equal to(=).
- I can find the sum of two whole numbers in the
100s.
- I can add and subtract money.
Measurement
& Geometry
- I can describe the parts of plane and solid
shapes.
- I can put shapes together to make another shape.

Word Analysis
- I can take apart a compound word to figure out
the meaning.
- I know that prefixes are at the beginning of a
word.
- I know that suffixes are at the end of a word.
- Using prefixes and suffixes change the meaning
of the word.
- I know that one word may have more than one
meaning.
Comprehension
- I can ask questions about what I read to help me
understand.
- I can recognize cause and effect in what I read.
- I can compare and contrast stories by different
authors.
- I can compare and contrast different versions of
the same story.
Writing
- I use quotation marks to
identify talking.
