Below are the Essential Standards for English Language
Arts and Mathematics that are the focus for teaching and learning for each
trimester:
Trimester 1 – 1st Benchmark
English Language Arts
Word Analysis
- I can
explain common synonyms, antonyms, and homographs.
Comprehension
- I can
find main ideas by finding the evidence that supports those ideas.
Writing
- I use a
colon to separate hours and minutes.
- I use
quotation marks correctly:
- around spoken words
- titles of poems, songs, short stories,
and so forth.
- I
use correct capitalization: proper nouns, beginnings of sentences, titles.
- I
wrote multiple paragraph compositions which include narratives,
response to
literature, research reports and persuasive writing.
Mathematics
Number Sense
·
I can calculate and check the reasonableness of
my answers when I: add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals.
·
I am proficient at dividing, including division
with decimals and 2-digit divisors.
Algebra & Functions
- I
use a letter to represent an unknown number.
- I
write simple algebraic expressions and solve equations with one variable.
Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
- I
compute and compare simple examples of mean, median, and mode.

Language Arts
Word Analysis
- I can
figure out the meaning of new words by using word origins.
- I can
figure out the meaning of complex words by using Greek and Latin roots and
affixes.
Comprehension
- I can
tell the difference between facts, supported inferences, and opinion in what I read.
- I can
explain that theme refers to the meaning or moral of a selection and
recognize themes in my reading.
Writing
- I
identify and correctly use verbs and modifiers that are often misused.
- I write
multiple-paragraph narratives that include:
- strong
situations or plots
- descriptive
settings
- strong endings.
Mathematics
Number Sense
- I
interpret percents as part of a hundred.
- I
find equivalent decimals, percents, and fractions.
- I
calculate a percent of a whole number.
- I
list the prime factors of all numbers through 50 and write them as products using exponents
when necessary (24=2x2x2x3=2 x3).
- I
can calculate and check the reasonableness of my answers when I add,
subtract, multiply and divide with positive and negative integers.
- I
solve simple and real world problems that involve adding and subtracting
fractions and mixed numbers. I put
my answers in simplest form.
- I
calculate and solve problems using multiplication and division of
fractions.
Algebra and Functions

I find and graph ordered pairs in the four
quadrants of a coordinate plane.

I solve and write equations involving linear
functions with integer values, and
then graph the resulting ordered pairs on a grid.

Word Analysis
- I can
explain the meaning of literary devices such as similes, metaphors,
imagery, etc.
Comprehension
- I can use
evidence from the text and my own knowledge to make inferences (read
between the lines), conclusions or generalizations.
- I can
contrast the differences between characters in a work of fiction and
discuss how it affects the plot or theme.
Writing
- I can
identify and correctly use:
- prepositional
phrases
- appositives
- independent
& dependent clauses
- I use
transitions and conjunctions to connect ideas.
- I use
correct spelling.
- I locate
relevant information in a text by using organization features (e.g.,
citations, end notes, bibliographic references).
- To
improve my writing I edit/revise by adding, deleting, clarifying, and
rearranging words and sentences.
Mathematics
Measurement & Geometry
- I
know the area of a rectangle therefore I can find the formula for the area
of a triangle and parallelogram.
- I
construct a cube and rectangular box from two dimensional patterns and use
these patterns to figure out the surface area of these objects.
- I
use the appropriate units in common measuring systems to figure out the
volume of rectangular solids.
- I
identify angles, perpendicular & parallel lines, rectangles, and triangles.
- I
measure & draw angles, perpendicular & parallel lines, rectangles, and triangles.
- I
know that the sum of the angles of any triangle is 180 degrees and the sum
of the angles of any quadrilateral is 360 degrees. I use this information to solve
problems.
